Biography

Gabriela Tannertová (born Jílková), Czech cimbalom player, was born in 1994 and started her cimbalom studies when she was five years old under Růžena Děcká. In 2015 graduated from the Janáček Conservatory and Grammar School in Ostrava, where she specialized in the classical cimbalom with Daniel Skála. She finished her studies at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest under Ilona Szeverényi and András Szalai. 

Currently she is working on her Master’s degree in Musicology studies at the Palacký University in Olomouc.

During years of active playing, Gabriela has attained significant achievements not only in the local music scene but also abroad (Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Netherlands, Portugal and France).


Prizes

  • 2018: Awarded the Bank of China Scholarship for her excellent musical talents

Gabriela received her first offers for solo concerts, which eventually took place in the context of Janáček’s Hukvaldy International Music Festival in 2006 and 2014. She participated at the 9th Cimbalom World Congress in Oberammergau (Germany), performed at the music festivals as Leoš Janáček’s International Music Festival in OstravaMusical Present in OstravaThe Icelandic Chamber Music FestivalInternational Cimbalom Festival in Valašské MeziříčíTerras Sem Sombra in Mértola etc.

 

She graduated with the Janáček Philharmonic in spring 2015, performing the Concerto for cimbalom and string orchestra by Daniel Skála. In spring 2016 she played with Janáček Philharmonic again as a soloist the Concerto Fantazia by Milan Báchorek at the concert “Chinese conductor with young Czech talents”.

Gabriela also collaborated with singers, choirs and music ensembles (e.g. Puppet Theatre in Ostrava, Doelen Ensemble in Rotterdam, the orchestra of Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest). Together with her former teacher, Daniel Skála, she performs in cimbalom duets. 

She also organizes concerts and projects with several other musicians, not only from the Czech Republic, but also from other countries – like Tamás Bácsi, pianist from Hungary or Auður Edda Erlendsdóttir, clarinetist from Iceland.

Hand in hand with Gabriela’s participation in the field of classical  music does her activity go in the folklore ensemble Pramínky, originating in Kopřivnice. With the ensemble Gabriela has been awarded the first place and the jury’s honorable mention for the outstanding cimbalom play at the national competition of elementary art schools in Kyjov, the first place at the Children’s Cimbalom Chamber Ensembles Competition in Brno (Hudební střípky Jaroslava Juráška) and they became to be the laureate of the International Folklore Festival in Strážnice 2015. 

In the course of their existence, the ensemble has collaborated with a number of other ensembles, the most famous of which has been the Japanese Youkio Sawa Trio or the Danube Trio (Rodrigo Contréraz – Chile, Katariina Tirmaste – Estonia, Yanush Hurwitz – Izrael). The ensemble has released two CDs and two DVDs.

On countless occasions, she has performed on Czech TV (Prague, Brno and Ostrava) and Noe TV, both of which she has collaborated with on documentaries about cimbalom, the instrument, the art of playing it, as well as its creators. She has also been a guest in the broadcasts at the Czech Radio, Radio Proglas and Hungarian Public Radio several times.

Currently is Gabriela working also as a cimbalom teacher and with her husband they are used to organize creative musical – visual workshops for children.
